Profiles in Hearing Loss – CCHAT Center (Children’s Choice for Hearing & Talking)

CCHAT opened its doors in 1996 with the singular mission of teaching children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) to develop the necessary listening and spoken language (LSL) skills required for lifelong success. Over time, CCHAT has expanded its services to meet the hearing health needs of the community. This includes the implementation of CCHAT’s Newborn Hearing Diagnostic Program, providing newborn hearing screenings and diagnostic evaluations for babies born throughout the region.

CCHAT is uniquely positioned to implement its approach in that it is one of only three programs certified by California to provide education-based, LSL services to children with hearing loss, and the only program of its kind serving the Greater Sacramento Metropolitan Area.

Originally a single classroom of 12 students, CCHAT has evolved to become a comprehensive resource for families of children with hearing loss and the premier LSL program in our region. In total, the program serves more than 400 children each year between its Rancho Cordova campus, mainstream services in local school districts and infant hearing screenings throughout the region. CCHAT’s extensive network of programs supports children with hearing loss and their families through every step of their journey, from the moment of diagnosis to successful mainstreaming in local schools. With 27 years of service delivery, CCHAT has a proven track record and has proudly watched its graduates enjoy success in a wide variety of fields.

CCHAT’s center-based services developed specifically for children with hearing loss include speech therapy, classroom instruction, daily music experiences, audiological support and parent education. With these services in place, CCHAT’s ultimate goal is to help each child who is DHH achieve age-appropriate listening, language and literacy skills.

If you are a parent or know someone with a child who has hearing loss, we encourage you to speak with their staff immediately. It is a life-changing experience watching your children adapt and overcome.
