Frustrated with the high cost of hearing aids? You could get some relief in just a few weeks!
As soon as this October, Americans with mild to moderate hearing loss will be able to buy hearing aids directly from stores, pharmacies and online retailers without a prescription or a doctor’s appointment.
Why? Finally, finally, finally, finally – after years of campaigning from the advocacy folks at HLAA – a final rule regulating the sale of OTC (over the counter) hearing aids was issued from the US. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday, August 16th. This new category of hearing aid will make the devices more accessible and affordable for millions of us with hearing loss.
The new rules only apply to air-conduction aids for people 18 or over who have mild to moderate hearing impairment. Hearing aids for children and for people with sever to profound loss will still need a prescription.
