Diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss at the age of 19 while residing in New Jersey\, she has devoted her professional journey to advocacy and education. \nWith a steadfast career spanning 32 years as a Paralegal at Seton Hall Law School University\, Dr. Porter-Vaughn’s commitment extends beyond the legal realm. She previously served as a research associate with the National Deaf Center and recently achieved her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Arizona Global Campus. Her published work focuses on the work readiness and preparation of deaf and hard-of-hearing college students. \nAs a seasoned author\, Dr. Porter-Vaughn has enriched the literary landscape with impactful works. In addition to “How We Hear: A Story of A HearStrong Champion Persisting Against All Odds” and the invaluable self-help guide\, “How We Hear: A Useful Guide to Help the Hearing Understand Hearing Loss\,” she has recently released “Whispered Journeys: Spoken Softly but Loudly Understood.” \nA 2019 graduate of the Gallaudet University Certified Peer Mentor Program\, she serves as a Snapshop Deaf Mentor for SPAN Parenting Network. Notably\, Dr. Porter-Vaughn holds the distinction of being the first African American President-Elect of the Hearing Loss Association of America – New Jersey State Association. She also served as the former president and co-founder of the Hearing Loss Association of America – Essex County Chapter. At the helm of the HLAA-New Jersey State Association Scholarship Program\, she actively contributes to fostering educational opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:By age four\, Claudia Marseille had hardly uttered a word. When her parents finally had her hearing tested and learned she had a severe hearing loss\, they chose to mainstream her\, hoping this would offer her the most “normal” childhood possible. With the help of a primitive hearing aid\, Claudia worked hard to learn to hear\, lipread\, and speak even as she tried to hide her disability in order to fit in. Our three panelists\, who all have hearing loss and have successfully navigated self-employment\, will share helpful tips\, personal stories and the pros and cons of being self-employed. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Kelly Tremblay and Lisa Yuan. Presented by the HLAA Accessible\, Inclusive Employment Task Force\, this free webinar will be captioned and recorded. \nPresenters \nEyra Abraham is the founder of Lisnen\, a startup that is changing the landscape of adaptive technologies for people with hearing loss using the latest AI technologies. She’s also a workshop trainer for non-profit and for-profit organizations on topics such as disability inclusion and entrepreneurship. Building on her own hearing loss and technical experiences\, her mission is to advance the positive impact of technologies to help people with disabilities gain equal access at home\, at work and in the community. She was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Black Women to Watch 2019. \n  \nAnne McIntosh\, Ph.D.\, is the president\, CEO and founder of Safe’N’Clear. After noticing a barrier with traditional PPE\, specifically face masks\, she created a solution to help millions of people access inclusive communication. Her modernized design includes a clear window that shows the user’s mouth\, allowing the deaf and hard of hearing an opportunity to speech-read and see facial expressions. Safe’N’Clear has also introduced the world’s first FDA-approved transparent surgical face mask with Level 1 and Level 3 protection. \n  \nShari Eberts is a passionate hearing health advocate\, HLAA Board Member and internationally recognized author and speaker on hearing loss issues. She is the founder of Living with Hearing Loss blog and online community\, and an executive producer of We Hear You\, an award-winning documentary about the hearing loss experience. Her book\, Hear & Beyond: Live Skillfully with Hearing Loss (co-authored with Gael Hannan)\, is the ultimate survival guide to living well with hearing loss. In 2022\, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) finalized its rule permitting the sale of OTC hearing aids directly to consumers over 18\, which are now available from a variety of retail and online stores. We’re presenting a series of four webinars through spring 2024\, designed to answer your questions and clear up confusion. \nThe second OTC 101: Ask the Experts webinar on February 20 features Charlotte S. Yeh\, M.D.\, chief medical officer for AARP Services\, Inc. and Kelly King\, Au.D.\, Ph.D.\, audiologist and program officer at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)\, on a panel moderated by HLAA Executive Director Barbara Kelley.
