• Young Adults

Are you between the ages of 18-35? Currently, there are initiatives being developed by young adults within HLAA to expand HLAA’s outreach to young adults. Within HLAA, there is:

    HEAR YA NOW
The Walk4Hearing is one of the biggest fundraisers for HLAA in addition to bringing visibility to people with hearing loss.  HEAR YA NOW was formed for the Long Beach walk in 2009, and the team consisted of over 40 hard of hearing, deaf, and hearing high school, college, and working age adults who raised over $2500. HEAR YA NOW is not a registered chapter of HLAA, but rather a network of young adults in California ages 18-40 with the aim to unite young adults with hearing loss through social events and an online community where information is exchanged about resources, support, advocacy and scholarship opportunities.

As of 2011, all of HEAR YA NOW’s funds are directed at scholarships for young adults to attend the HLAA national conventions, where they can network, learn about new technologies and resources, present workshops, serve on panels, and develop a strong support base with other young adults with hearing loss in the US and elsewhere.  The National Convention has proven to be an invaluable experience in recent years for young people, and we want to encourage their interest and participation in issues and occupations that address the communicative, social, technological, legislative, and personal needs of people with varying degrees of hearing. The next convention is in Providence, RI in 2012. For more info on how to apply, click here.

    HearingLossNation
An HLAA initiative, HearingLossNation is an online international community that was designed in an effort to reach out to hard of hearing people between the ages of 18 and 35 by appealing to their unique needs and interests, often on issues related to hearing loss. The website allows users to create their own personal profile with a bio, location, photos, and status update, post in forums and discussions, join groups, create events, add videos, send personal messages, and post personal blogs.
